One of the most publicized fund-raising affairs in Lahore, the Mauj Mela, organized by the Thalassaemia Society of Pakistan was celebrated for the 6th year in a row on the 10th of March 2002 at the Race Course Park. As the name suggests “Mauj Mela” is basically a fun fair organized to bring the people in touch with the thalassaemic children and their families and to make them aware of the ramifications of the disease.

Last year, the Lahoris witnessed a Mauj Mela that was the culmination of efforts of more than 300 volunteers who worked night and day to provide the most colorful entertainment to the thalassaemic children. The event sponsored by Lever Brothers (Lipton Yellow Label), Nestle and CDL was inaugurated by Mr. Kamran Lashari (Director General, Parks and Horticulture Authority, Lahore). Prof. Dr. Yasmin Raashid delivered a heartwarming welcome address to the participants who numbered in several thousands. Later Mr. Kamran Lashari visited all the stalls and commended the efforts of the Thalassaemia Society for putting up an event of this dimension. He mentioned that looking at such chirpy children playfully running around and enjoying each and every activity, it becomes hard to imagine that they suffer from a disease like Thalassaemia. Participating in such event gives them a break from the daily tedium of their lives and becomes a much needed change.

Towards the end of the day, the children were entertained by live performances by Ibrar-ul-Haq, Jawad Ahmed and Irum Hassan.
